Good book
I found Extra Virgin by accident one night flipping through the Cooking Channel- what a happy accident! I adore cooking and can tell right away if someone knows what they are doing. I was put off ( sick of celebrities trying to cook) but could not have been more wrong. The show has had me in tears over the passion and energy Debi and Gabriele have over Tuscany and it's food. I bought this book on preorder and was thrilled that it captured all of the magic of the show in its pages. The Ricotta pancakes ( I added fresh raspberries) have become a Sunday morning staple. Super easy and tons of protein which help them stick with you. I found myself turning to the book for motivation and as a basic cookbook where other fail to inspire. I have found myself saving bread to make Panzanella and looking for ways to "Tuscanize" meals which is economic and healthy. As a self taught home chef with 30 years of experience, it takes something special to capture my interest and this cookbook is the real deal. Highest recommendation!
I got the book and was tearing into it like it was Christmas morning! I love the show and even watch the reruns. I use to DVR the ones I wanted to be sure to cook. I learned how to make homemade mozzarella and limoncello! You have not lived until you have made homemade mozzarella. Take a tip from Gabriel and get the kids or as for me the grand kids involved, they will love it AND eat it like crazy. The recipes are not to many ingredients and unlike some others you can find the ingredients you need at your local market. The book is beautifully illustrated and I am so excited to start cooking through it. A must have REAL ITALIAN book for your collection! You will use it more than you think. I just have made the ROASTED PORK LOIN and the Limoncello so I thought I would post a picture for you. The taste is as good as it looks and not even a drinker but all my friends want the Limoncello which I have resting right now and they will get it on the 4th of July weekend! The fresh herbs make a big difference and I have my herb boxes that are growing very well. The recipes are truly delicious and EASY to follow directions. Hope you enjoy!
Probably like a lot of people out there who love to cook, I own a fair number of cookbooks, and now rarely buy new ones. However I was so curious to purchase this one because of the great reviews and the authors Italian heritage and so I took a chance. I am so glad I did. This book has so many unique things, like the wonderful section that tells you how to stock your pantry so that you always have ingredients on hand to whip up freshly made Tuscan dishes. The one author, grew up in Tuscany, and tells you many wonderful little anecdotal stories about some of the dishes from his childhood. What I also love is that there is a nice combination of gorgeous, luscious more elegant dishes, mixed in with other very simple dishes that you can whip up in ten or fifteen minutes. Their version of Chicken Cacciatora is so simple and incredibly delicious. Soups such as the Tuscan Bread and Vegetable Soup is hearty and so filling, but also they have nice suggestions regarding this dish if your short on time, and even about adding whether of not to added grated cheese. I love little simple dishes in here like the White Bean and Pancetta Bruschetta, which was so enjoyable that one night I ended up just having that and a glass of wine for dinner. Other simple things like Prosciutto and Melon or simple things like grilled apricots. There are several simple pasta dishes you can whip up if you are tired and just need something simple. For me, this book is a wonderful complimentary cookbook to Marcella Hazam's legendary cookbook (which I have used for many years), with this Extra Virgin book giving you a different twist on great Italian dishes and explain them very nicely.
Just finished our dinner of risotto from the recipe in this book. All I can say is thank you for this resource. Three years ago we made our first trip to Italy. We were entranced by the people, history, and food. Upon our return we sought out a guide to Italian cuisine and came across this book. Since that time we have enjoyed and shared countless meals based upon the recipes in this book. From meals prepared over a campfire in northern Michigan to meals shared with friends/wine we have had much joy! Thank you so much for your book. It has guided us on our exploration of Italy and its culinary pleasures.
I wonder about the many many glowing comments here! Nothing useful for us in this book:, poor edits, too basic, vague at times, or incomplete directions. Nice photos. Cute title. The recipes are simple ones you can get all over the web. That isn't a common problem for me on Amazon. The return page just referred me to the order page for the label.
This is a lovingly put together cookbook that not only celebrates Italian food but also the love that Gabriel and Debi have for each other. Loved the photos of family gatherings and how their children share events and places with them. Also loved how tradition, family values and customs are so highly regarded. I bought it because I love the show and what they cook. The only problem I had was not all my favorite recipes were even in the book. There were some ingredients I hesitate to try (guanciale--pig jowls) and some I couldn't find, lardo, zucchini blossoms, Taleggio cheese and amaretti cookies. Loved their stories and I will definitely try one of their recipes sometime soon.
