She must find her roots and her family in order to bring it back to life.I was very excited to find a paranormal book where the magic element didn’t overtake the book, but was integrated into the story and added to the novel.I love character driven novels and Witches of Dark Root is a well-written character-driven book. The focus on the sisters and their personalities kept me interested, even though the plot moved a little slow. I rather enjoyed the fact that this book felt like a coming of age book for an adult. Throughout the move back to Dark Root and living through her past and finding new connections with her sisters, Maggie discovers who she is and what she wants out of life.The hints of something else going on were intriguing and the ending tied up most of my questions.
This was a really fun read!The dialog between the sisters all came off as really real, which just added to the depth of the storytelling. I was constantly caught by surprise on where the book was going, and never once was I disappointed. In fact, I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel.I did find Aunt Dora's dialog to take away from the reading experience. I found her accent to be extremely distracting, and didn't really add much to the narrative. Take out the accents, or, at the very least toning it down, could go a long ways in endearing the character to the reader rather than being such a jarring experience.I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a fun, light-hearted, mystical read to while away a rainy afternoon. The plot takes unexpected twists and turns, and the characters are fun to know. At the book's end, I found myself wishing that Dark Root was real, as it would be a place I'd totally spend a vacation at!
The story is intriguing, and I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series. Maggie's character changes and grows during the course of the story, which is a wonderful thing to see. Not all authors show that very well, but Aasheim did a great job with that. The only drawback was Aunt Dora's rather bizarre and unidentifiable accent. Where did it come from? Why does she have an accent when her older sister, Miss Sasha, does not? She descended from Juliana Benbridge who founded Dark Root a century ago, thus Dora was raised in Oregon and not in some foreign country. There is no logical reason for her to have any accent at all. Accents are tricky to write, but when it's not logical for a character to have, there shouldn't be an accent. I found it very distracting while reading her dialogue, it was terribly jarring to the flow of the conversations. I hope it's left out of the following books.
Maggie flees her kooky witch mother and the small town they live in the first chance that she gets, but when her new life as a cult leader falls apart and her mother’s health declines, she returns home and reunites with her mother and sisters. This book swivels somewhat uneasily between darker paranormal themes and light romantic comedy, but the balance evens out somewhat as the book progresses. Overall, it’s a slow start to the series – but subsequent books may be better given that the characters and plot are now all introduced.Question: why does Aunt Dora have a completely different accent than her sister and her nieces? It’s incredibly distracting in all of her scenes, I couldn’t figure out why she was speaking in quasi-dialect when literally nobody else was presented in that way.
This book shares many similarities with all those Sandra Bullock movies like "Practical Magic" and "Hope Floats." It's a feel-good story with a potential for sadness and which ends on an upbeat note.Maggie and her sisters have "escaped" Dark Root, but come back when their mother declines. The four sisters have not prospered in their absence, and the town also has become run down. With a childhood friend re-opening the cafe across the street, they resurrect their mother's store, the spirit of the town, and its (literal) magic.Yes, there is magic, but it doesn't really overwhelm the plot. The book really seems to be about owning up to your mistakes and your responsibilities before you can go one and be content with your life.There are threads left unfinished, but for the most part, the ending is fitting, if not particularly surprising.
This is a first read from this author. The book was quite entertaining. A story of self discovery on the part of a young woman, Maggie, the daughter of Ms. Sasha Shantay. Maggie is one of four daughters brought up in Dark Root, a small town in Oregon. Sasha is the head of a coven of witches in Dark Root that keep the light in their part of the world. Raised to take over her role as the head of the coven, Maggie denies her heritage and leaves Dark Root with Michael, a man that comes to Dark Root to finder her. Together they start a small cult in northern California. When Michael is caught cheating on Maggie, she returns to Dark Root only to stay long enough to regroup. Through a series of events Maggie has to come face to face with what she's denied all her life.I enjoyed the book and learned a little more about witchery in the process. A dragon man, myself, I am enjoying stepping outside the box to engage with the larger realm of fantasy. The Witches of Dark Root was a good read, not too long and did have an acceptable ending, leaving the reader into the next in the series. When I finish my current TBR list, I will probably go back and pick up the next book. I do recommend this to fantasy readers, you won't be disappointed.
