I LOVE this book, like a old friend.1. Everything is numbered the steps and the recipes themselves. For instance: Recipe 3 Special Occasion, Step 1. Makes things move so much faster when you don't have to skim a paragraph to find where you were when interrupted. I do this myself with my baking recipes- I put tasks in numerical order.2. So easy to follow. It's like flower arranging for dummies but without the stupid title. For instance this is the 1st task of a Recipe is "place the maple branch on the right side of the pitcher so that the leaves hang over the rim." See? I dare you try to find a way to do that wrong.3. It looks nice so you can leave it out. I, personally, do not like ugly things laying out or even using them. Maybe I'm picky-but imagine this look on a side table versus "Whatever for Dummies" with its bright yellow and black colors.4. The design inside is as nice as it is outside.What would have made me LOVE this book like a lover would be:1. Simple Illustrations. But only when necessary (not necessary in most cases)2. Suggest substitutions for hard to find or very $$$ flowers. I just made some substitutions on the fly because the none of the 100 or so types of flowers my farmers market has were "celosia" not the "crested variety" or the "plume variety."-Practical- I did recipe 3, it turned out beautiful I think except I wasn't sure of the height requirements on the last five or so flowers. I spent $40. for all of the flowers. I had to buy more than I needed-so maybe it won't always be that much.I live by amazon reviews and I am so bad to leave them. I would more reviews if I thought they would be helpful so if this let me know.
This book gets two stars for all the pretty pictures. There is very little instruction. The "ingredients" (flowers) are, for the most part, extremely uncommon and would be impossible to find even if you had access to an amazing floral wholesaler. You won't be able to go to your local store and pick up some smoke bush, an olive branch, and some flowering oregano. You might be able to fine one or two flowers from each "recipe" but you wouldn't be able to find the other eight. I think it would be all but impossible to recreate any of the beautiful arrangements even if you tried to run out and find some nasturtium vines, stems of yarrow, echinacea pods, scabiosa and a handful of astrantia. Those are all from one recipe and every single one is like that. The book shows off a huge variety of rarely seen flowers. Now I am off to look for stems of hebe, branches of snowberry and stems of cyclamen.
I've been interested in floral arranging for some months now, but haven't found the right book that would teach me all the romantic arrangements I've been seeing from florists like Amy Merrick and others. I know I won't be like the pro's, but this book has given me the foundation and confidence I needed for my work as a photographer who gets inspired by towers. I've tried one of the step-by-step recipes with different flowers, as i can't get a hold of all the ones featured, and the arrangement I created made me very pleased as it was WAY better then anything I've done in the past. This books isn't for everyone, but if you're looking for a good floral arranging book this is the one to get!
Granted, I am coming off a floral high from spending a full week with Kiana Underwood's Color Me Floral, which would more properly be titled Floral Nirvana. Every arrangement in that book is lush and gorgeous and heavenly. I never wanted to put it down. So, after that, I came to The Flower Recipe Book. It was a disappointment. Most of the featured flowers come with a simple arrangement and a "special occasion" arrangement. The simple arrangement is quite literally a few blooms of the featured flowers stuck in a vessel with nothing else. I don't need a book to help me do that. The aesthetic of the book is definitely rustic, not elegant rustic, but rusted-tin-can rustic. In fact, the rusted tin can seems to be a favorite vessel for the authors. The rest of the vessels are equally unappealing. Could they not have found even one pretty (not necessarily pricey) glass vase? And, no, the science beaker doesn't count. I will say that the arrangements in this book are much more doable than Kiana Underwood's, but then her book is more about inspiration than how-to. If you like rustic, and want some ideas for easy-ish arrangements, then you will be happy with this book. But if you want a lift to your spirit, a glimpse of something heavenly, this book is not that.
This book is great for beginners as it starts with the very basics of floral supplies, flower types and containers and works you up to actually arranging with step by step pictures. I am so happy I got this book as it also has some very helpful tips for prolonging the life of flowers.
This book was so inspiring, after reading it I went out in the grey winter scenery and managed to collect elements for several flower compositions. Didn't follow the exact recipes, especially because not everything is available here, but there's enough inspiration in the book to allow you to understand composition, arrangement and color pairing. I almost didn't buy this book as it seemed like a marginal interest, but turned out to be one of the best surprise books I got this year.
I love this book and have thought that I would order it for many years now. When it popped up as a recommended and I happen to be looking for these types of images and ideas to inspire my painting experiments, I grabbed it. Happy purchase, arrived quickly. Thank you
A good book with many colorful illustrations. However, it is not something I would purchase again as I didn't feel it provided the information I was looking for. I felt the overall reviews on this book were rather generous in nature.
