I'm very surprised at the rather poor or at least misleading quality of this book. I purchased it largely because of the 5-star reviews praising it, but I am not as moved as other reviewers for good reason, which I will explain. I am a carpenter who has admired and studied Craftsman architecture and construction for many years, having the pleasure of personally viewing and working on the inside of multiple Craftsman homes on the West and East Coasts in areas that had vibrant Craftsman followings, so I have seen my fair share of both wealthy and more humble Craftsman bungalows from the early 1900s into the 1940s. For those interested in obtaining a detailed, visual examination of the variety of interior options within the style, this book is not a good or accurate representation of what I, and many historians, would consider Craftsman bungalows. The majority of the interiors featured in the book appear to be either from Craftsmans too elaborate or too gaudy in staging decorations to be considered "bungalows" defined in the way the houses would have been at the time of their construction, and the authors gloss over the few interiors that do remain true to the Craftsman bungalow style. In "A Word About Craftsman Architecture," Gustav Stickley, who I think many of us including the authors consider an expert on Craftsman bungalow architecture, writes, "The Craftsman type of building is largely the result not of elaboration, but of elimination." In "How to Build a Bungalow" (1903), he writes, "the American bungalow [is] nothing more or less than a summer residence of extreme simplicity, of economic construction and intended for more or less primitive living. . . . The interior is as simple as the outside." In other essays in The Craftsman, he laments the overuse of frivolous decoration and unnecessary embellishment of tapestry, paint, nick knacks, and wall coverings that take away from the richness of the floor plan, built-ins, hearth, and trim that by themselves decorate the Craftsman home. Stickley certainly doesn't argue for simple interiors by today's standards or the use of no decoration, but he argues for practical use of architecture and furnishings that don't cross the line into gaudy and cluttered. Many period photos of Craftsman bungalow interiors and many advertising drawings support Stickley's opinion. So how does "Inside the Bungalow" fit into an accurate representation of a variety of Craftsman bungalow interiors? Not well. At times, the problems arise from the featured interior designs themselves, and many times the problems arise from the photographers' poor choice of staging decorations. I'm aware that people live in the houses featured in this book, but that's not my problem when I expect a detailed representation and clear photos of the interior. For instance, page 28 depicts an inglenook that is so cluttered with pottery, candles, a plant, carpets and a painting that the clarity and beauty of the woodwork, brickwork, and entire room as a whole are lost in the hodgepodge of items that overshadow the architecture. Why would one place burning candles on the mantle when the fire is lit and the two wall lamps are lit and then jam an oversized painting in there too? This kind of clutter continues throughout the book in an irritating way with rooms crammed with so many nick knacks, dishes, and whatnot that we can't even admire the beauty of the architecture, woodwork, and masonry obstructed by the decorations. Flipping through the book in front of me, I see that it could easily be a photo catalog of clay pottery (what's up with so many of these houses being obsessed with clay pottery?) just as easily as a collection of bungalow interiors. At other times, the interiors the authors chose to focus on are gaudy and sometimes tilt into the realm of Victorianesque in their ornamentation and wallpaper. Certainly, these may classify as Craftsman bungalow, but they are outliers and not what I expected from the book description and reviews. And a major issue occurs because the authors left out staples of the Craftsman bungalow style. They spend extremely little time focusing on detailed photos and descriptions of built-in hutches, bookcases, shelves, seats, secretaires, colonnades, casework, and baseboard work that largely define Craftsman interiors. I've reviewed all the pages, and I find 2 detailed close-up photos of book cases/shelves, 3 somewhat close-up photos of built-in hutches, 2 close-ups of colonnades, and one close-up of a secretaire. Out of 184 pages, that's the little attention they spend on the glory of Craftsman architecture. They seem to value focusing on the staged furniture and decorations more than detailed photos of Craftsman bungalow interiors with well-balanced furnishings. If you are looking for the wonderful variety of details that make Craftsman bungalows so unique and beautiful, you will find better photos using an internet search engine or buying another book. I was hoping to find an array of detailed photos and discussion of bungalow interiors in this book, but I found more content that appears to be tailored to a general audience of people who possibly might accept the modern mis-categorization of a Craftsman bungalow to mean any house that has interior wood trim and a firebox, which will not do for people interested in historical representations of the style through tasteful photos. For those wanting an accurate, detailed, and plentiful look at Craftsman bungalow interiors, I suggest finding another book. Obviously, home owners and builders of the day had different interpretations of "Craftsman" and "bungalow," which is part of the beauty of the unique variety, but this book does not find the happy middle ground where most tradesmen worked and people lived. I do find some of the prose in the book interesting and worth reading, but the issues I've described make this book a huge disappointment.
A million ideas for the hobbyist woodworker/DIYer. Methods of construction and fabrication were simpler (mostly hand powered) then and designs were created to facilitate production. Even in its most ornate manifestation, Arts and Crafts/Craftsman styles can be replicated by the hobbyist/DIYer with a modicum of equipment. It's a great book if you just like to look at pictures of the style of the time.Oh, by the way, there is good history in there too for the pure academician.
This book is terrific if you are interested in bungalow home furniture. The furniture is lovely and many arts and crafts styles are shown. The pictures are excellent and I first saw this book in the Bungalow section of the Oakland Museum in Oakland, CA. I cannot recommend it highly enough. The books is exceptional in that the homes range from the 1930's to present day so you can see classic and contemporary versions.
wonderful photos and lots of text to identify the houses in the book.
A good book for anyone who likes the 20th Century bungalow look. We have gradually redecorated and re-purposed my folks' old mid-century modern home with many aspects of the bungalow...to good advantage.
I am very impressed. I was looking for excellent pictures of the furnishing inside a "Bungalow" and this book has many, all of which give me excellent ideas for the furniture of that period.
Beautiful pictures, which is what I was looking for. There is some commentary, but that is secondary to the beautiful pictures. I wish there was more of them!
